West Newbury Has Been Awarded an MVP Grant

Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness working group is now underway!

With approval from the Selectmen and Town Manager, a volunteer group from the Energy Advisory Committee, the Open Space Committee, and the Conservation Commission submitted a Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) grant application. The program provides support for cities and towns in Massachusetts to begin the process of planning for climate change resiliency and implementing priority projects.

On June 19, 2019, the state announced that West Newbury was among the municipalities accepted into the program, with an award of $25,000 for FY 2020. The Commonwealth funds will support the involvement of a certified facilitator who will interview key experts and stakeholders, draft a report, and conduct public workshops.

Objectives of this effort include

  1. Cooperation and interaction among various Town stakeholders in addressing a common problem,
  2. Identification of the Town's vulnerabilities from climate change, and
  3. Development of an information base and plan that will enable West Newbury to make investments of taxpayer funds, permitting decisions, and further grant applications best suited to climate change impacts.
