MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for maintenance and improvements to West Newbury’s roadways, facilities, and grounds. The DPW is dedicated to keeping the town’s resources and infrastructure operational, safe, and clean in an environmentally-sensitive manner. The employees at DPW appreciate the support we receive from the residents, whom express their approval of our hard work on a daily basis. Your encouragement and support are paramount to the success of our department.  Some of the routine tasks DPW performs include:

  • Street and sidewalk repairs, paving, pavement markings, signage, roadway and pedestrian safety improvement projects, and street opening permits;
  • Drainage system upgrades, catch basin cleaning, town-wide street cleaning, system mapping, illicit discharge detection, and compliance with the NDPES MS4 Stormwater Management program;
  • Tree-trimming, removal of hazardous trees, and tree-planting;
  • Town-wide landscaping and mowing;
  • Page School Playground maintenance;
  • Snow removal and treatment on town roadways, sidewalks, and parking areas;
  • Maintenance and improvements of town-owned buildings and grounds including the Town Offices and Annex, SAGE Center, Public Safety Complex, Town Hall, Library, DPW Building, and Page School;  
  • Logistical planning and facility setup/breakdown for major public events (i.e. Town Meetings, Bicentennial events, Memorial Day Parade, ceremonies, etc.);
  • Assist Water Department with emergency infrastructure repairs;
  • Assist with implementation of energy efficiency programs at town facilities;
  • Grant-writing, and grants management/administration;
  • Act as Town liaison with State and Regional entities such as MassDOT and MVPC, including participating in regional initiatives related to procurement (joint purchasing), stormwater management, transportation improvements, etc.;
  • Serve as Chief Procurement Officer for Town, including leading procurement and contracting;
  • Capital planning;
  • Provide dedicated or as-needed support to various Boards/Commissions/Committees including Tree Committee, Capital Improvements Committee, Energy & Sustainability Committee, Climate Change Resiliency Committee, and Select Board; and
  • Management of various town projects and initiatives.
