The West Newbury Garden Club presents: "Backyard Birds", a Lecture with Bill Gette

Thursday, October 5, 2023, 6:30pm

The West Newbury Garden Club is pleased to announce Bill Gette, former director of the Joppa Flats Education Center, will be speaking on "Backyard Birds" at the October 5th's garden club meeting.  The meeting is held at the Annex of the 1910 Building at 381 Main St., West Newbury and begins at 6:30 p.m.  Guests are welcome to attend the presentation for a $5.00 guest fee.  We hope to see you there.

During his richly illustrated PowerPoint presentation, Bill Gette will review the species of birds typically seen at local feeding stations and in backyard sanctuaries.  He will discuss the many aids to field identification (e.g., size, body shape, bill shape, behavior), ranges, food preferences, and other exciting facts about these amazing animals that not only survive, but prosper, in our severe New England winters.  Bill will highlight how the ranges and populations of many bird species have changed in recent years due to climate change, changes in land use, and development. He will also discuss things that you can do to create backyard sanctuaries and attract birds, including controlling domestic animals, reducing mowing, and cultivating plants that will provide both food and cover for nesting.
