Two Virtual G.A.R. Library Programs Tonight!

Wednesday, September 13, 2023, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Two virtual library programs tonight! If you are interested in both, Considering Lawn Alternatives will be recorded, so you can register for both programs and watch the recording later!

Author Heather Wolf "Find More Birds: 111 Surprising Ways to Spot Birds Wherever You Are"

Wednesday, September 13

7:00—8:00 PM

Zoom

Author Heather Wolf will be discussing her new book Find More Birds: 111 Surprising Ways to Spot Birds Wherever You Are.

As Heather Wolf explains in her book, it all comes down to how you tune in to the show happening around you, the one in which birds—highly skilled at staying under the radar—are the stars. As your senses sharpen and “noticing” becomes second nature, your daily routines will turn into bird-finding adventures, too. Whether you’re strolling down the block or parking your car, you never know what will surprise you next.

Considering Lawn Alternatives

Wednesday, September 13

 7:00—8:00 PM

 Zoom

*This program will be recorded and a link to the recording will be shared with everyone who registers.*

It is estimated that lawns cover 32 million acres in the United States. In fact, turf is the largest crop grown in the US. But is there another way?

Join Trevor Smith, Design and Education Manager for Weston Nurseries, for a virtual talk on the why, what, and how of lawn alternatives.

Transitioning your lawn away from a traditional turf lawn can lead to benefits such as:

  • Less maintenance - believe it or not alternative lawns require little to no fertilizer, irrigation and weeding once established
  • Low to no mow - depending on your choice you may need to cut once a year
  • Improved water use - many alternatives have strong and deep root systems which improve water efficiency through decreased irrigation and the hydrology of your property
  • Supporting pollinators and native wildlife with native alternatives

We will discuss different plant options that could replace some or all of your traditional turf lawn, as well as the steps needed to get started with your alternative lawn.
