Rocks Village Bridge Update

A message from MassDOT

The following communication was received from MassDOT

District 4  Highway Division Director

The following is an update on the status of the Rocks Village Bridge repairs in response to the over height vehicle strike that occurred on 3/17.  As previously reported, the repair contractor commenced the permanent repairs on 8/31.  The contractor is completing the installation of the remaining new structural steel components and bolt testing this week. The bridge is currently supported on cribbing towers with hydraulic jacks on the fender system.  Once the steel repairs are fully complete, the jacks need to be carefully removed to allow the mechanical elements of the structure to be tested and the swing span to be re-balanced to ensure proper opening and closing. This process is expected to take 2-3 days.

Once the bridge has been fully tested, it will be placed in the closed position to allow the newly installed steel components to be painted with intermediate and surface coats. The painting is scheduled to commence on Monday, 10/3.  The painting work is expected to take approximately one week to complete, provided favorable weather conditions are available.  Based on the current schedule, MassDOT is expecting to reopen the bridge to normal operations during the week of 10/10.

MassDOT is continuing to work towards the implementation of the advance warning signage plan and in lane pavement markings on regional and local roadways on both sides of the bridge.
