Riverbend Black Tupelo

  • These five Black Tupelo (also known as Black Gum) create a remarkable grove along the Riverbend Trail at the Indian River outlet.  Shiny black leaves top the deeply furrowed bark in summer, but the real show is in the early fall when the Black Tupelos display their brilliant yellow, orange, crimson colors.  To find out more about the Black Tupelo, click here

7.  MIDDLE STREET GREEN ASH

Green Ash

  • This remarkable Green Ash has graced Middle Street for about 200 years and likely was a central tree on one of our original farmsteads.  The tree has been fortunate to have property owners, the Homeths, who have been taking exceptional care of this unique specimen and prevented the Emerald Ash Borer from claiming this State Champion.  To find out more about this Green Ash, click here

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ROSTER

What is the Roster of Significant & Remarkable Trees in West Newbury?
As part of its mission to protect and preserve the forest heritage of West Newbury, the Tree Committee is compiling a Roster of Significant and Remarkable Trees.  Property owners are invited to bring inspirational trees to the attention of the Tree Commmittee for possible addition to the Roster.  "Significant" or "Remarkable" can encompass the size or age of the tree or its aesthetic, botanical, cultural, or historical value.

How Can I Nominate a Tree for Consideration?
Please download the Significant & Remarkable Tree Nomination Form, fill it in with as much information as you can, and send the completed form to: West Newbury Tree Committee, Town Office Building, 381 Main Street, West Newbury, MA  01985.  To upload the Nomination Form, click here.

What Happens After Nomination?
Members of the Tree Committee will contact the landowner to arrange a visit to observe and measure the tree.  The Tree Committee will then evaluate all available information about the tree and make a preliminary determination of whether the tree is a good candidate for inclusion in the Roster.  The Tree Committee will then contact the landowner to discuss the preliminaruy determination before any final action is taken.  Because all members of the Tree Committee are volunteers and because the Committee desires to be inclusive in its approach to assembling the Roster, this process may take some time to complete.

Can I Nominate More Than One Tree?
Yes.  If you do so, the Tree Committee requests that you prioritize your nominations so that the top priority can be addressed initially.
