Notice regarding Mill Pond

Updates on water quality testing
BOH notice re Mill Pond

The Town Manager’s office and the Mill Pond Committee are actively working to update the water quality testing standards in the Mill Pond Management Plan.  As part of that work, we had a biologist on site on August 8 with water quality meters, and he measured nitrogen levels, dissolved oxygen, chlorides and conductivity.  All were within normal ranges.

Earlier this week, we received notice of blue-green coloring in some of the water at Mill Pond.  There is no way to tell if a blue-green algal bloom is toxic just by looking at it.  The Town has contracted for additional water quality testing to take place and we will receive results right after Labor Day.

In the meantime, due to the potential presence of Cyanobacteria in Mill Pond, the Board of Health recommends that all humans, dogs, horses, etc. refrain from ingesting or having contact with the water until further notice.  The attached notice has been posted at Mill Pond.

Toxins can persist in the water after a bloom; watch for signs of recent blooms, such as green scum on the shoreline. When in doubt, stay out! If you or your pet go into water where there may be a bloom, wash off with fresh water immediately afterwards.  Additional information on Cyanobacteria can be found at the following link. https://www.mass.gov/guides/cyanobacterial-harmful-algal-blooms-cyanohabs-water

This notice is a precautionary measure to protect the public and its beloved pets & animals.

Updates will be provided at the next Board of Selectmen meeting (Sept. 3rd) and at the next Mill Pond Committee meeting (Sept 4th).
