MIDDLE ST BRIDGE CLOSURE – Now June 26th

MIDDLE ST BRIDGE CLOSURE – Now June 26th

The City of Newburyport has the lead responsibility for the reconstruction of the Middle St Bridge, over the Artichoke River because the bridge is located within their city limits. The city has extended the timing the bridge will remain open until June 26th. As a result the West Newbury Selectmen have re-voted the Middle St closure date to June 26th.

As previously announced, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has recommended the closure of the Artichoke River Bridge, do to a critical structural deficiency on the spandrel wall and wingwall.

We will publish information on the length of time the bridge will be closed as soon as the repairs are engineered and a cost is established. Local traffic only will have access to Middle St, between Garden St and the bridge. The bridge is governed by extra regulation because it spans a reservoir. We expect it to be closed for an extended period of time, however it will not be a permanent closure.
