Maple Street Historic Area

Recommended for Listing on the National Register of Historic Places

Maple Street, originally Ash Street, stretches from the center of Town across from the Post Office to the intersection with Meetinghouse Hill Road, Georgetown Road, and Ash Street. In 1830, only three homes plus the Second Meetinghouse (moved from Meeting House Hill) populated the street. In the mid-1800's, Post Office Square became a central location for industry in West Newbury. Durgin Brothers Shoe Factory opened there in 1843, the same year James Durgin built a home at 14 Maple Street. In that era, Henry T. Bailey had a grocery in Post Office Square and lived at 12 Maple Street.  During this time, many homes and some small businesses were introduced along Maple Street.
