Welcome to West Newbury, MA

Located 40 miles north of Boston, West Newbury is a delightful community characterized by rolling hills with broad valleys and an unspoiled rural charm. The Merrimack River, which flows along the northern border, provides scenic beauty and recreational boating. Hiking trails being developed along the West Newbury shoreline will connect with those of adjacent communities.

MANDATORY WATER RESTRICTION

The West Newbury Board of Water Commissioners has implemented a mandatory water restriction starting on Saturday July 10th. At this time residents must stop the use of in-ground irrigation and above ground garden hose sprinkler systems. Please turn off your timers on your irrigation systems. Pool filling and car washing is also prohibited. Residents will be allowed to hand water their gardens and shrubs between the hours of 6:00am and 8:00am only.

The ban is necessary to maintain adequate water levels in our tanks for fire protection and to relieve stressed water sources in West Newbury and Newburyport. This restriction will be in effect indefinitely. If water tank levels continue to drop or if the drought worsens we will need to enforce a total outdoor watering ban.

We ask residents who irrigate with water from private wells to place a sign that reads “WELL WATER” on their lawn so it can easily be seen by the public.
Water and Police Department personnel will monitor outdoor watering. Watering outside of the hours allowed will result in fines. Each day of violation shall constitute a separate offense and a fine of $100. If more than two fines are given your water service may be suspended. If your water service is suspended you will be charged $250.00 before water service is restored.

Please help out everyone in our community and abide by these restrictions. If you have any questions, please call the Water Department at (978)363-1100 extension 127.
